A 400-year-old A-listed mill set in 14 acres of rivers, waterfalls, and ancient woodland. Nestled beside ancient oaks and the serene Shirmers Burn, this is a place where nature takes center stage. Wildlife is abundant, and Galloway’s night skies are some of the clearest in the world. Hike local hills, find wild swimming spots, or explore by bike. Then unwind in the wood-fired hot tub, sweat it out in the sauna, and let the river’s song wash everything away. Adventure or stillness—you choose.
The space
Ironmacannie Mill served the local community as a grain mill for over 400 years before its conversion into a home in 1990. Now sleeping up to 10 guests, it features three bedrooms plus fold-out futons in two public rooms. The decor is simple and rustic, using real materials that honor the building’s heritage.
At the heart of the house is a spacious dining area, perfect for gathering and sharing time with family and friends. The mill spans three floors, with a bathroom, shower room, and a downstairs toilet. The machinery room still holds much of the original mill workings, which turn when water flows to the wheel. Step through the old kiln room door, and you’re right by the riverside and the mill’s ancient oaks, immersed in history and nature—all together a unique place.

Lorraine and Ulla made our stay just wonderful. We were 13 university students in the house and they left us to our own devices, but we're willing to help and... read more set up the bath and sauna for us at just a few minutes notice, which was very helpful! The sauna is great, and homemade! The only difficult thing for us was finding transport in Sunday so a few of the girls could get back in time for 2:00 labs. Thankfully after much stress about clashing bus times, Ulla agreed to drive them to Dumfries! We were extremely grateful and payed him for his efforts. I would also mention that although sauna costs a bit of money for wood and initial set up, we found it to be more than worth the experience. Finally, I highly advise exploring the pine wood forest down the road. We went twice!

We booked this for my Mum’s 60th birthday. This was designed to be a break for the family following the COVID lockdown beginning to be lifted.
We were appalled... read more at the state of the property especially as this host has committed to your COVID guidelines and so our expectation was that it would be clean and safe.
We made a call to Air BnB on the first night of our stay and were told our issues would be escalated immediately to an account manager but received no further outreach and this as well as the extreme rural location left us with no option but to stay there at distress to all of us.
Please see a list of items below that guests should consider ahead of booking:
- Only after booking we were told that there was building works happening on premises, there was no free WiFi (property is advertised as having this) or phone signal. We continued with the booking believing that otherwise we would not be refunded and we thought we would try make the best of it, but the stay got increasingly worse..
- The property has a shared drive (we were not told this).. only that there was enough room for 3x cars. As a result one of our vehicles was damaged by the hosts child riding a scooter into it.
- The oven was filthy resulting in billowing smoke whenever trying to use it, we reported this to the host who admitted it had not been cleaned properly and although they attempted to clean it still produced smoke which made it hard to cook.
- On the first night the property was extremely cold, we had not had any guidance or explanation on how to use items within the home from the host and so we messaged her with urgency to ask how to activate the central heating, it took her until the next day to turn this on and let us know
- The plates and cutlery were all dirty and had to be put through the dishwasher by ourselves to ensure cleanliness again this is against the COVID guidelines the host committed too
-There were serious issues with mould in the property in both bathrooms including: mould on the floor, mould on the shower/sinks and even on the shower head
- Whilst it is a rural location so understand there can be bugs etc there were bugs all over a light fitting in the bedroom. There were also a lot of cobwebs suggesting things had not been cleaned.
- We were required to strip the bedding following our stay in support of COVID and were absolutely appalled and disgusted at what we found (see images) including extreme filth and mould on pillows, this discovery actually caused one of our party to have a panic attack.
All of these issues have documented photos.
We are highlighting these things as we really don't want others to experience what we did.

Lorraine was the perfect host - there when we needed her and leaving us to it the rest of the time. She gave a great recommendation for a beach nearby, and although sadly for her the hot tub had broken, Lorraine sent over an immediate refund.
