Tucked away on the “Hidden Road” south of Balmaclellan is Ironmacannie Mill, believed to be one of the oldest corn and flour watermills in the South of Scotland. The mill was powered by water from the Shirmers Burn and was used by all the tenanted farms on the Kenmure Castle Estate from the early 1600’s. It was used commercially until the 1940’s, but thereafter fell slowly into disrepair. Then in the 1990’s, it was converted into a dwelling house with much of the Mill machinery still in situ.
Now the mill serves as a self catering holiday let, and a model of using renewable energy. It powers itself with hydroelectricity, coming off very same source that used to spin the millstones. It is also heated throughout the year with a ground source heat pump and a good efficient wood burning stove.
Ironmacannie mill can facilitate 10 guests. There are two double bedrooms, a room with two bunk beds and two additional double sofa beds. We are also dog friendly.
Amazing location....the stream running past the house was beautiful and safe to explore if you wanted.
The hot tub next to the waterfalls was amazing.
Very rural, tranquil and the owners were lovely people and very helpful.
Don’t hesitate to book.
This is a brilliant place to stay, really unique and special. The house itself is stunning and interesting and is within a beautiful and tranquil landscape. My family and I had an awesome time chilling out and exploring the local woodland and magnificent Loch Ken nearby. In addition to this, a really magical part of our holiday was witnessing the love of the land, of the hosts and community of volunteers that surround the mill. I wish there were more places with this ethos of sustainable living. It was a privelege to witness! Oh and if you are wondering.... Book the sauna!
The mill is a very fun and unique space in an incredible location that provides lots of fun family walks and activities! My family and I stayed here and 9 of us slept at the mill comfortably - it’s a very fun space to stay in! The space is very tidy and provides clean bedding and towels and a well-stocked kitchen! The mill is perfect for a little country stay and break from busy cities!
We booked this for my Mum’s 60th birthday. This was designed to be a break for the family following the COVID lockdown beginning to be lifted.
We were appalled at the state of the property especially as this host has committed to your COVID guidelines and so our expectation was that it would be clean and safe.
We made a call to Air BnB on the first night of our stay and were told our issues would be escalated immediately to an account manager but received no further outreach and this as well as the extreme rural location left us with no option but to stay there at distress to all of us.
Please see a list of items below that guests should consider ahead of booking:
- Only after booking we were told that there was building works happening on premises, there was no free WiFi (property is advertised as having this) or phone signal. We continued with the booking believing that otherwise we would not be refunded and we thought we would try make the best of it, but the stay got increasingly worse..
- The property has a shared drive (we were not told this).. only that there was enough room for 3x cars. As a result one of our vehicles was damaged by the hosts child riding a scooter into it.
- The oven was filthy resulting in billowing smoke whenever trying to use it, we reported this to the host who admitted it had not been cleaned properly and although they attempted to clean it still produced smoke which made it hard to cook.
- On the first night the property was extremely cold, we had not had any guidance or explanation on how to use items within the home from the host and so we messaged her with urgency to ask how to activate the central heating, it took her until the next day to turn this on and let us know
- The plates and cutlery were all dirty and had to be put through the dishwasher by ourselves to ensure cleanliness again this is against the COVID guidelines the host committed too
-There were serious issues with mould in the property in both bathrooms including: mould on the floor, mould on the shower/sinks and even on the shower head
- Whilst it is a rural location so understand there can be bugs etc there were bugs all over a light fitting in the bedroom. There were also a lot of cobwebs suggesting things had not been cleaned.
- We were required to strip the bedding following our stay in support of COVID and were absolutely appalled and disgusted at what we found (see images) including extreme filth and mould on pillows, this discovery actually caused one of our party to have a panic attack.
All of these issues have documented photos.
We are highlighting these things as we really don't want others to experience what we did.
Fabulous location with great river running alongside steep terraced riverside garden. We enjoyed the hot tub and sauna and cooling off in the river. It was a truly get away from it all experience and lovely hosts. Nearby is Loch Ken for swimming and water sports and mountain biking and walking in the Galloway Forest Park. You’ll love it if you’re laid back, like adventuring or want to be inspired to live a creative greener lifestyle.
The Mill was a great find for our family, there were 8 of us, 6 adults and 2 kids. Everyone loved the place. We BBQd on the first night, there is limited outdoor furniture but we’d noticed this from pics so took our own.
The grounds are great for exploring and pretty private.
The house was big enough for three couples and two kids not to be under each other’s feet.
The fridge was a standard fridge which for a weekends worth of food and drinks was a little small but we managed.
The two futons were also a little uncomfortable for those sleeping on them.
Overall we had a fab weekend in this amazing place and as long as you don’t mind the odd spider would definitely recommend it.
The beauty of the grounds cannot be overstated!! Must be magical in the summer! The house is unique and charming, if a bit rustic. Hosts were friendly, helpful, and available right next door. Great place for families and friends to get together! (Although definitely be aware that children need to be old enough to stay clear of all the surrounding water features!)
The most amazing and beautiful place I have ever visited. Lorraine is the most accoadating and lovely lady I have ever met. Thank you so much for letting us be a part of your amazing life so the time we were there. Can't wait to visit again 🙂
The mill was perfect for a quiet, long weekend away. It was spacious and had everything we needed whilst we were there. I would recommend getting the hot tub and loved that it was away from the main building. The location was great for travelling to local beaches, with these being a short drive away. The mill was clean and tidy and catered for a large group with many different rooms. We loved the quirkiness of the mill and had an amazing time there! The value for money was unbelievable compared to other properties we had looked at. We will definitely be trying to visit again!
Lorraine and Ulla made our stay just wonderful. We were 13 university students in the house and they left us to our own devices, but we're willing to help and set up the bath and sauna for us at just a few minutes notice, which was very helpful! The sauna is great, and homemade! The only difficult thing for us was finding transport in Sunday so a few of the girls could get back in time for 2:00 labs. Thankfully after much stress about clashing bus times, Ulla agreed to drive them to Dumfries! We were extremely grateful and payed him for his efforts. I would also mention that although sauna costs a bit of money for wood and initial set up, we found it to be more than worth the experience. Finally, I highly advise exploring the pine wood forest down the road. We went twice!
Lovely place with great hosts. The mill kept a lot warmer than I was expecting. The sky at night is beautiful. Loads of lovely walking spots in the surrounding area.
Amazing location and good place to stay. Lorraine and her family were really helpful and always very friendly. The house was a bit cool when we arrived but, especially with the fire in the downstairs lounge, it soon warmed up.
Great space, we had a lovely time here and will definitely consider returning again the the future! The hot tub was a great addition.
My friends and I visited mid march and we had an absolutely wonderful time. The area is beautiful, the house fantastic and the hot tub excellent! Fully recommend, Lorraine was a amazing host, quick response and super helpful tips.
We will be back!

We had an amazing stay, the mill was outstanding, homely, cosy and with lots of character, the location is amazing, surrounded by nature, looking at the stars at night whilst in bed, was very magical. Lorraine was lovely and catered to all our needs. We will be definitely be booking to stay again. ☺️
Lorraine's place and the surrounding area is your perfect location for the Borderlands and Galloway Forest Park explorationd. The farm road strolls through the hills and dales lead you back to the mill it's waterfalls and amazing gardens! Lovely place for family and friends retreat!
If you’re looking for a rustic far from the madding crowd stay, this place is perfect. Totally out in the countryside with a river and waterfall the setting is very picturesque. The mill house is beautiful very old and rustic with a log burner and a very olde worlde feel to it.
On arrival we were greeted by our very friendly host Lorraine and I got the feeling that if we asked nothing would be too much trouble.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and the dark sky experience was something else!
Close by is loch Ken...9 miles long and beautiful and the small town of Castle Douglas a beautiful gem with lots of unusual shops and great stock.
On the whole a thoroughly enjoyable stay.
We had a great time on our stay - lots of lovely walks nearby. Wigtown was our favourite - we spent the day there looking through bookshops and drinking coffee. Would suggest double checking all amenities are available before booking - hot tub is currently broken however a new one is on its way so hopefully this will be rectified soon. Lorraine was a very communicative host and gave us great tips for things to do around the area.
A great, relaxing trip. Just what we needed for a few days away. The Mill building is interesting and quirky, the river running past adds real character and so peaceful at night listening to it. Weather a bit too cold to try out the hot tub! Everyone was very friendly, our dogs felt quite at home and a really interesting setup. The surrounding country is stunning and so much to do in the area - coastal walks, hill walks, wildlife. Recommend a visit
I chose this place for my birthday with friends because the pictures looked so good. It turns out the pictures dont do this place justice, it's a truly amazing place both inside and out. It is really cosy as well which was surprising being such an old building. Will definitely return in the future, and Lorraine and Ula were wonderful hosts.
Lovely stay, garden is great with the waterfall and river running through. Really liked the log fire in the house to relax by in the evenings. Nice areas nearby for walks and not too far to travel into Castle Douglas for a choice of cafes/restaurants. Very relaxing place to get away from it all!
We had such an amazing stay at the mill celebrating a 30th birthday! The accommodation was sparkling clean and very unique. We will be back
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the old mill. Fabulous setting by the river and waterfall. Hot tub was amazing. Enjoyed roasting marshmallows in the garden my the fire on the warm summer evenings and cosied up in front of the sitting room log burner during the rainy evenings watching DVDs. A wonderful time in a special place. Thank you Lorraine and Uula.
